As Israel’s leaders continued on Monday to mull a possible response to the massive Iranian aerial attack over the weekend, they faced several choices, all of which carry their own risks. In the past, Israel has hit back hard when its enemies attacked, hoping to discourage further hostilities. But this time Israel is juggling a host of conflicting interests, as well as some new factors. Some Israelis see an opportunity to use military strikes to fulfill the longstanding Israeli goal of degrading Iran’s nuclear program. Analysts say the success of Israel and its allies, led by the United States, in blocking most of the Iranian attack has given Israel the leeway to choose how and when to respond, if at all.

In February 2023, David Paton, guitar case in hand, strode across the most famous pedestrian walkway in rock history and into London’s Abbey Road Studios. Paton was no stranger to the rooms where the Beatles changed the course of popular music: His 1970s pop-rock band Pilot recorded two albums there. In his second life, as an in-demand studio and touring musician for the likes of Kate Bush and Elton John, he clocked numerous sessions with the prog-rock outfit the Alan Parsons Project, whose namesake produced Pilot’s signature hit, “Magic.” He even spent some time there with his boyhood hero, Paul McCartney, singing backup vocals on Wings’ “Mull of Kintyre.”Paton had come to London to record a new version of “Magic.” “It was a great thrill to be back at Abbey Road, singing my song,” he said in a recent video interview from his home studio in Edinburgh, an array of guitars displayed behind him. The track’s stair-step chorus — “Oh, oh, oh/it’s MAAA-gic” — could test Paton’s vocal range even back in 1974, when the song became a worldwide hit, peaking at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The 2-year Treasury yield was last up by 6 basis points at 4.63%. The yield on the 10-year Treasury had risen 1 basis point to 4.21%. The 2-year Treasury yield ticked higher Thursday as investors considered the path ahead for interest rates following comments from a Federal Reserve official and prepared for key inflation data. Investors weighed the outlook for monetary policy and looked ahead to key economic data as uncertainty around when and how often interest rates will be cut this year persists. Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller on Wednesday said there was "no rush" to cut interest rates, adding that recent economic data indicated that rates may need to stay elevated for longer.

A treasure trove for Biden watchers and historiansIn the interview, Biden speaks at length and fluently, easily recalling in-depth details about his vice presidency, family life and lore. One good week does not make a campaignOne person not ready to let the age issue go is Trump, who himself is 77. The former president’s focus on Biden’s age reflects the fact that one good week will not change a harsh reality of the coming eight months. Outside Washington and the self-contained world of politics and campaigns, concerns about Biden’s age will be hard to shift. The age issue was rumbling long before it became a major campaign issue.

Oklahoma and Kentucky are also taking steps to clarify their abortion bans, though in both states the attorneys general, not physicians, are the ones dictating the terms. Since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the constitutional right to abortion in 2022, states have been free to enact their own restrictions. “It’s not going to deal with hard calls,” said Greer Donley, an associate professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law who is an expert on abortion law. As some states mull how to clarify — without weakening — their abortion bans, abortion rights advocates in several states continue to challenge the bans with lawsuits. Frustrated with the board's inaction, Amy and Steven Bresnen, a couple who are lawyers and lobbyists, filed a petition in January asking it to clarify what circumstances qualify as medical exceptions to the state's abortion ban.

Cigna on Thursday said it will limit how much health plans and employers spend on weight loss drugs each year in a bid to expand insurance coverage for those highly popular treatments. The effort by insurance giant Cigna could make weight loss treatments more accessible. They deferred CNBC to Cigna for details on the insurance spending cap. Those medicines treat weight loss and diabetes by mimicking one or more hormones produced in the gut to suppress appetite and regulate blood sugar. Cigna said providing "financial predictability" through a cost cap will allow health plans and employers to better plan to manage GLP-1 spending.

CNN —If you drink every time someone mentions “Barbie” at this Sunday’s Oscars, you probably won’t be awake to see the best picture category presented, even with the show’s earlier start time. Yet while the year’s biggest box-office winner will get plenty of attention – due in part to its much-debated “snubs” – the 96th Academy Awards looks destined to be “Oppenheimer’s” night. While few superhero or genre movies have managed to break through (“Black Panther” being an exception), “Barbie’s” mix of stars and social commentary nabbed eight nominations, including best picture. The award-industrial complex’s fondness for smaller films, further fueled by their availability via streaming services, is evident in the other best picture contenders. Cillian Murphy accepts the Screen Actors Guild award for his starring role in "Oppenheimer," the heavy favorite on Oscar night.

New York CNN —US stocks fell Monday morning after Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said Sunday the central bank is not ready to cut interest rates yet. We just want some more confidence before we take that very important step of beginning to cut interest rates,” he said in a “60 Minutes” interview with CBS that aired late Sunday. Traders see a mere 15% expectation that the Fed will cut rates in March, compared to 46% a week ago. Elsewhere, McDonald’s shares fell 3.9% after the fast-food chain reported mixed earnings and said that turmoil in the Middle East is hurting its business. Boeing shares lost 1.2% after a new problem has been found during the production of 737 Max jets that will force Boeing to rework about 50 planes that have not yet been delivered.

The latest jobs data shows that America's job market remains shockingly robust in the face of the highest interest rates in 23 years. And the January report could have finally quelled Wall Street's belief that the Federal Reserve could start to cut interest rates as soon as March, according to futures. About a month ago, the odds of a March cut were north of 75%, but as of Friday morning, they were at 19.5%. The Fed's March 19-20 meeting is still several weeks away and many economic reports are due by then, but investors finally seem to be coming to grip with what Fed officials have been communicating all along. The January jobs report shows that demand is expected to remain solid, with Americans employed and enjoying strong wage growth.

On the other hand, Dow Jones Industrial Average futures hovered near the flatline. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.97%, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite respectively gained 1.25% and 1.3%. The action follows a Wednesday sell-off that started after Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell indicated that a rate cut at the March meeting was unlikely. Economists polled by Dow Jones are calling for payrolls to have grown by 185,000 positions, and for the unemployment rate to inch higher to 3.8%. That compares to December's blowout of 216,000 positions added and an unemployment rate of 3.7%.

NEW YORK (AP) — Denny Laine, a British singer, songwriter and guitarist who performed in an early, pop-oriented version of the Moody Blues and was later Paul McCartney's longtime sideman in the ex-Beatle's solo band Wings, has died at age 79. Laine, inducted five years ago into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Moody Blues, died Tuesday in Naples, Florida. His death comes almost exactly 50 years after the release of McCartney's acclaimed “Band On the Run” album, on which Laine played guitar and provided backing vocals. The Moody Blues then turned to the ambitious, classically influenced sounds of “Nights in White Satin" and other songs. Founded in 1971, the year after the Beatles broke up, Wings went through various personnel changes over the following decade, with Laine, McCartney and McCartney's wife, Linda.

An oil pump jack is seen in the Loco Hills region, New Mexico, U.S., April 6, 2023. Oil futures nudged higher on Monday, extending gains on expectations of OPEC+ deepening supply cuts to shore up prices, which have fallen for four weeks on easing concern of Mid-East supply disruption brought about by the Israel-Hamas conflict. Brent crude futures climbed 11 cents, or 0.1%, to $80.72 a barrel by 0012 GMT while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude was at $75.97 a barrel, up 8 cents. Oil prices have dropped by almost 20% since late September while prompt inter-month spreads for Brent and WTI slipped into contango last week. The Swiss National Bank and the Swiss Finance Ministry are part of the conversations with lenders, one source said. A representative for the finance ministry said that the issue of bank runs is part of an overall evaluation of the too-big-to-fail regulatory framework in Switzerland. Regulators worldwide have since been grappling with the risk of bank runs, which in the era of digital banking have accelerated in speed. Financial regulators will need to make sure that banks retain adequate financial buffers as advances in technology increase the risk of bank runs, Bank of England executive director for markets, Andrew Hauser, said on Friday at a conference in London. They risk penalizing Swiss banks if they were to be introduced only in Switzerland, one of the sources said.

The earnings season also continues with Apple, Airbnb, McDonald's, Moderna and Eli Lilly & Co among the many reporting this week. Early on Monday, S&P 500 futures had edged up 0.3% to 4,151, while Nasdaq futures added 0.5%. Japan's Nikkei (.N225) fell 1.1% amid speculation the Bank of Japan (BOJ) might tweak its yield curve control (YCC) policy after its two-day policy meeting wraps up on Tuesday. The Bank of England is also expected to stay on hold this week, with markets pricing around a 70% chance it is done tightening altogether. Any U.S. action would come only after Venezuela's opposition and Maduro's representatives sign an agreement under which he commits to a presidential election date and to the lifting of bans on some opposition candidates, these two sources said. It would also allow participation of opposition figures who are currently barred from holding office, the source added. Reuters reported last week, citing five sources, that Venezuela and the United States had progressed in talks that could allow at least one additional foreign oil firm to take Venezuelan crude oil for debt repayment if Maduro resumed negotiations with the opposition. Two of those sources had named France's Maurel & Prom (MAUP.PA), a joint venture partner with Venezuela state-run oil company PDVSA, as a possible recipient of a comfort letter. The return to talks was announced in a statement published by Norway, an observer of the talks, which are meant to provide a way out of Venezuela's long-running political and economic crisis.

NEW YORK, Oct 16 (Reuters) - Hedge fund JAT Capital on Monday urged Overstock.com (OSTK.O) to consider selling certain assets and overhauling its management and compensation, warning it may seek board seats if its suggestions are ignored, a regulatory filing on Monday showed. The hedge fund, run by John Thaler, owns a 9.1% stake in Overstock.com, and made its demands public in the filing after sending a letter outlining its wishes to the company last week. JAT is not traditionally an activist investor but its filing signaled mounting frustration with the company and left open the option of pursuing strategies like running a proxy contest. JAT also wants the company to emphasize stock option participation and develop a business plan with financial objectives, the filing said.
